Zeta Causes More Than 430,000 Power Outages In North Carolina

More than 430,000 North Carolina residents lost power as Tropical Storm Zeta moved through the Tar Heel State on Thursday morning.

In total, about 449,000 outages were reported in North Carolina by poweroutage.us as of 1:30 p.m., which has since decreased to 361,676 out of 4,828,169 customers tracked. Duke Energy -- which is based in Charlotte -- accounted for the most power outages with 407,000 of its 3,518,273 North Carolina customers accounted for losing power as of 1:30 p.m., ABC 11 reports.

A total of 7,600 customers in Durham County were reported to have lost power; 4,260 in Orange County; and more than 1,300 in Wake County.

Zeta initially hit the coast of Louisiana as a Category 2 Hurricane and brought heavy rainfall and strong winds once it reached North Carolina. A high-wind warning was issued for 21 counties in Central North Carolina including Alamance, Chatham, Durham, Edgecombe, Franklin, Granville, Halifax, Harnett, Johnston, Lee, Montgomery, Moore, Nash, Orange, Person, Randolph, Stanly, Vance, Wake, Warren and Wilson on Thursday, ABC 11 reports.

Raleigh, Rocky Mount, Burlington and Greensboro have all seen wind gusts exceed 50 MPH as of 1:30 p.m. on Thursday. Fayeteville also reported gust reaching 49 MPH, which led to President Donald Trump postponing a planned appearance for Thursday evening.
